Ultrasonic Liposuction Before and After Gallery

Liposuction is a way of recontouring the body by suctioning out specific areas of excess fat. It requires only very small incisions, just large enough for the diameter of the hollow tube (cannula) which removes the fat. It was first done in the 1970s and since then several variations have been developed on how it is done.

The original procedure used an injection of a small amount of fluid. This was designed to help loosen the fat cells, along with the surgeon’s back-and-forth movement of the cannula.

The fluid was a saline solution, containing:

Lidocaine for local anesthesia
Epinephrine to reduce bleeding
Salt to match it to the body’s natural fluids

This traditional liposuction is still done in some cases. Dr. Rai uses whichever type of liposuction is best for each particular patient.

Tumescent liposuction is a variation on the traditional method, using a larger amount of the same fluid. The increased amount makes more space between the muscle and fat and more room for the cannula.

Third, there is Ultrasound-Assisted liposuction (UAL), which is a variation of tumescent liposuction. The difference is that the cannula vibrates from ultrasound. This liquefies the fat more easily and quickly. Ultrasound is sound vibration above our range of human hearing. (In contrast, infrasound is below our range of hearing.)
